What is arm lift surgery?

Also known as brachioplasty, arm lift surgery is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms. This surgery is ideal for people who have experienced rapid weight loss, or who have undergone successful weight-loss surgery, as these individuals tend to experience excess loose skin.

Arm lift surgery is normally performed under local anaesthetic, and may require a hospital stay, depending on what the surgeon suggests.

How is arm lift surgery performed?

The introduction of the Lipomatic device greatly helped to advance the liposuction process, with this also contributing to the technique used for arm lift surgery.

The arm lift procedure begins with the surgeon creating markings on the elbow, arms and armpits, with the location and size of the incision lines depending on the type of arm lift surgery that is to be performed.

This is followed by the necessary incisions being made for the removal of the excess fat and skin. The surgeon will try to make sure the incisions are concealed in the armpits or to the inside of the arms, so that they are not as easily visible.

After this, liposuction is used to remove excess fat. Once the incisions have been made, the surgeon removes the excess skin and fat, and brings the incisions together to create smooth and tighter arm contour. The skin is then smoothed over the new contour of the arm.

Finally, the surgeon closes the incisions precisely, in order to minimise scarring. The sutures may be placed underneath the skin, where they will eventually be absorbed by the body. Then, sterile dressings and garments will be required as an aid to the healing process.

Why is an arm lift compression garment important?

If you undergo an arm lift surgery procedure like the above, on completion, you can expect your surgeon to provide you with dressings and an arm lift compression garment.

The surgeon will instruct you as to the length of time for which you will be required to wear the arm compression garment, and you might need to wear it during both the day and night.

An arm compression vest and sleeves typically need to be worn for up to two to four weeks after the procedure. It is very important to wear an arm lift compression garment after surgery, given how this will help to improve your comfort, as well as to alleviate and speed up the reduction of swelling.

The wearing of an arm lift compression garment will help to shorten your overall recovery time, and will significantly flatten any scars that the procedure causes.

Arm compression sleeves like those available in the RECOVA store will help to improve blood circulation, while reducing bruising and swelling. If you try to do without an arm lift compression garment, your recovery will be less comfortable and will take considerably longer. In addition, scars would still be visible after the operation.

So, you can hopefully begin to understand it is for your own benefit that you wear an arm compression vest and sleeves after your arm lift surgery, for as long as you are required to do so.
